Landing at Luqa Airport, we were met by our guide, the very charming Clive Cortis, who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of his island home. Our first stop was uber cool Valletta – “a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen” – Malta’s capital, which can justifiably boast of some of Europe’s finest treasures: majestic palaces, churches and museums. Just off the main square, you will find designer boutiques, diamond emporiums and delicious patisseries and restaurants. Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of St Paul hangs in the magnificent baroque St John’s Cathedral and one of the main attractions at St John’s is the inlaid marble floor consisting of a collection of tombstones.
