Meghan Markle Malta

Meghan Markle Malta

Meghan Markle visited Malta in 2015 organised by ElleUK and I was contacted by the Malta Tourism Authority to be her guide for a full day highlights of Malta private tour.

I met her and her manager at Casa Ellul Boutique hotel in Valletta and immediately I felt at ease. She’s a very down to earth person, humble and fun to be with.

We started the day by visiting Valletta, the capital city of Malta and immediately people from all walks of life recognised her after her participation in the Suits series. After walking around the main streets and stopping to take pictures of the main monuments, we visited St John’s Cathedral and Caravaggio paintings and immediately Meghan Markle was impressed with all the baroque symbols carved on gilded walls and the theatrical art of the two Caravaggio paintings, the ‘Beheading of St John’ and ‘St Jerome.’ Writing on her blog, that, ‘It took her breath away’

After the cathedral ,we walked down republic street and at Casa Rocca Piccola, Meghan Markle met the owner of the house, Marchese De Piro. During the tour, Marches De Piro, offered her to wear the ‘Ghonnella’, which is a form of a woman head’s dress and shawl which was worn back in time.

Maltese food and drink was mentioned several times by Meghan Markle and after Valletta tour, we couldn’t have missed a stop at Merdiana Winery for wine tasting of D.O.C. Maltese wines. We couldn’t have chosen a better day, sunny, not too hot and enjoying one of the best maltese wines on a terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Meghan Markle’s great-great grandmother was born in Malta at the end of the 19th century, during the time when Malta was a British colony and the island’s harbours where the Meditterranean naval base of the empire and during Markle’s stay she immediately felt at home and welcomed.

Writing on her blog ‘The Tig’, she described Malta as one of the best cultural and historical countries, especially for our food and wine.
