Steeped in history and culture, the Maltese islands have influence from the Neoliths, seen in the remains of the mysterious megalith temples assembled from tons of stone slabs. But the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans also left their traces on the islands before yielding them to Arabs and then the Normans. Malta really became a key cultural player in 17th and 18th century Europe, helped by the Knights of St John.
