Tarxien temples

Discover with us the most unique prehistoric monuments in the world. Visit the three Temples of Tarxien, dating back from 3, 600 B. C. to 2, 800 B. C. These temples are renowned for the detail of their carvings, which include domestic animals carved in relief, altars, and screens decorated with spiral designs and other patterns. The temples where excavated by the father of archaeology of Malta , Sir Temi Zammit in the beginning of the 20th century and are considered as being the first to be excavated in a scientific method. Most of the original artifacts excavated from the site, today are at The National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta.

Ghar dalam cave

Located close to Birzebbugia is the underground cave of Ghar Dalam where the first traces of life on the island date back to 180, 000 years ago. You’ll notice an enormous quantity of animal bone deposits from the lower strata of the cave’s subsoil. Most of the remains discovered are of Elephants and hippopotamus which used to live on the island during the ice ages. What’s quite fascinating is that these animals where dwarf, because bones which where discovered inside caves show signs of dwarfism. In the upper layers, remains of the first inhabitants of Malta where discovered, which dates back to 7000 years ago.
